Jeff and I have always been pretty good at making sure we get a date night once a week. This year we decided to step them up a bit and switch each week who plans it. So for the first one I took Jeff skating at Olympic Plaza. Neither of us had been skating there before and it was absolutely gorgeous! They had a big Christmas tree in the middle of the ice and we had the view of the Calgary tower and all the downtown lights. I felt like I was in a movie! Besides our skates being a little big since we dug some up from a box my sister gave us to store, we had a blast. Afterwards, we went to a nice restaurant since we were already downtown called Model Milk. It was amazing. We will definitely be back. Jeff and I have always shared a love of fine dining!
Over the holidays, before the kids started school, I tried to find lots of fun things for them to do, as well as take some time to relax and enjoy not having to rush kids off to school. One day I took them to the Big Box play center. It's in the north of Calgary so we hadn't been before, but it's really fun, and really big! It was quite the task keeping my eye on all of them and finding them all when we had to leave, but I managed. Barely! Deacon is my wanderer who I can never seem to find.
I also took him and Leo to the mall one day and after playing in the play place there I was putting Leo in the stroller. In the seconds I did that, Deacon had put his boots on and was nowhere to be found. I didn't panic until 10 minutes of looking for him went by. I had searched every store nearby, up the escalator, all around the play place again. Finally I told a worker to call for security because I lost my son! Right as she was calling I looked a few stores down and saw him with a mall worker outside the store. Ahhhh what a relief. And also an embarassment! But I'm telling you, that kid is so sneaky!!
We gave the kids an early birthday present and took them to the Paw Patrol Live play. Deacon loved it and was really cute, but Bentley wasn't all that excited. She's been having a hard time with her emotions lately, but we are working on it. They both struggled a little when we wouldn't buy them the $15 cotton candy and $15 juice. (Not even exaggerating, how on earth can they charge that much?!). Anyways, once we settled in and gave them the decently priced treats, they had a good time.
Okay so lately I have been super into exercising. I would love to go to the gym every single day but...yeah obviously that's not possible. So Jeff let's me go every Tuesday night and Saturday morning and I take the kids and put them in babysitting on Thursday mornings. So usually 3 days a week, unless I can squeeze in another time. I don't know why, but lately I'm just a little addicted to how good it makes me feel! Being a mom to 3 littles can be hard, and working out keeps me sane. The classes at GoodLife are also so fun and push me really hard. We had a high fitness night for a RS activity one night which was also so fun!
We had our Couples Potluck dinner at the McNaughton's house this January with like 5 couples and Stacy Ann made Indian food. I contributed Creme Brulee for dessert. I had never tried to make it before, but it's actually really easy! I even bought a culinary torch to scorch the tops of them off of Amazon, but didn't realize I had to buy the propane too...haha. So, Jeff had a big blowtorch laying around that we used instead. It almost blew the sugar totally off because it was so strong, but it ended up doing the trick and they tasted so good!
Kim Johnson invited us to her birthday party, which was a dance party at the church. The kids had SO much fun. Bentley kept saying, "I just can't stop dancing," and Deacon danced with her a lot. It was adorable. Then of course they found some friends and ran around the gym and the church all night. They had a ton of food and Leo made some new friends. Jeff jived with me and we got a few comments on how good we looked...I honestly didn't know he knew how to dance!
When school started up again, Bentley also started skating and piano lessons. In the fall it was dance and swimming, and this time Bentley picked and decided to change it up. I took her skating a few times before the lesson to try to get her able to stand on the ice without holding on to something. And these lessons have been great so far! She started out just walking on the ice in her skates, and is now gliding really well. She even does little jumps.
My dad is teaching her piano now and she loves having her Grandpa teach her! He is very good at making it fun and I haven't had to ask her to practice once. She just does it on her own, multiple times a day. Makes my heart melt a little, since I have enjoyed playing piano so much in my life. It's been a good way for me to express emotion and I love that she is loving it! Right now we have a keyboard, but one day we will buy a real piano!
Here are a few other random pictures of the kids including a trip to the library and a picture I found on Jeff's phone of Bentley and him on Father's day at her preschool from last year! It's so cute I had to put it somewhere.
