Pumpkin carving was done with the Bennett's again (as tradition goes), this time at their house. We brought our pumpkins and supplies over and got to work. Deacon loved grabbing the pumpkin guts and playing in the pumpkin. Bentley didn't love touching it, but she did great helping out and using the tools. Then she was excited about carving a cat into her pumpkin. So she drew and I helped her whenever she needed me. Deacon picked one of the pictures from the book we have and Jeff helped him carve it. He wanted to be apart of the whole process. Bentley lost interest and played with her friends while I carved the cat. We made sure to separate the seeds, because we always love baking and eating them the next day. Once we were done, we lit them up and turned out the lights. Always the best part for the kids! They oohed and awwed and danced around like little crazies in excitement. Even Leo could feel all the excitement around him and busted out some moves. The kids were giddy and excited about Halloween coming up and we all had so much fun. Not to mention all of them playing with "Ok Google" and picking different songs to dance to. It was a great night!
Jeff and I have started a new thing where we have a potluck and games night with a few other couples every month, kidless. In October we were hosting so it was at our house and we did the meat. We chose a Halloween theme and it was so much fun! A couple people cancelled so I also did the bloody punch, baked potatoes and some jalapeno pepper mummies. The McNaughton's brought a salad and the Gallup's brought homemade donuts with custard for dessert. Besides being delicious, it was a blast! We ate and played lots of games, and Don and Cindy were nice enough to have the kids sleep over at their house!
Every year Laura Dunford hosts a Halloween party for the kids, so I dressed the kids up and brought them over there one day. I made little cheese string witch brooms. They ate lots of treats, did a costume parade, and had fun playing with their friends. The best part was the cute pictures! So many cute kids.
Renfrew, Deacon's school threw a Halloween event on the weekend that our whole family went to. Jeff and I even dressed up as Where's Waldo and Where's Wenda. Unfortunately we didn't really take many pictures, so those costumes may make an appearance again next year! Deacon was thrilled about his Hulk costume, and Bentley dressed up as a unicorn for this event. The night started with crafts, cookie decorating, story reading, and playing in all the classrooms. Then, we all met in the gym and there were two really entertaining numbers put on by the teachers. The last one ended with the "What does the Fox say" song and turned into a dance party. The kids loved it all and had a lot of fun! Leo tolerated his stroller.
On Halloween day my mom watched the boys for me so I could spend the day at Bentley's school with her. The teacher had sent a note saying that all the kids needed a parent or someone to be there with them for the pumpkin carving and morning activities and were welcome to stay the afternoon as well so I figured I'd make a day of it! I helped hide the pumpkins outside while the kids went into the school for a bit and then Bentley came out and picked a pumpkin. Then we went inside to carve it. Bentley helped clean it out and draw on the pumpkin, and I mostly carved it. It turned out very cute! Then we read a bunch of Halloween books together until it was time for the parade in the gym. After getting everyone dresses, the kids went in line as a class to the gym and us parents headed to the gym as well. Their class sat down in the center to watch some of the other classes go around the gym until it was their turn. It was really fun to see a few people I knew, and also nice to get to hang out with Emily Whiteley because Porter is in Bentley's class.
After that I left for an hour or two to get some lunch and came back at the time the teacher had told us to return. They had a bunch of Halloween activities for the kids to do and I helped out at the sugar cookie decorating station. After the kids completed everything they watched a Halloween movie with treats. When school was over we left with a big bag of goodies and our pumpkin. It was so fun to be there and I think Bentley really enjoyed the day. She is absolutely loving Kindergarten!
After Bentley's school we drove to my parents house to pick up the other kids. I brought all their costumes and Halloween bags so that they could show Grandma and Grandpa their costumes and get their first trick or treating candies! I also used that time to take a bunch of pictures of them while it was still light out. They were so excited at this point! But, I told them we had to go home and eat dinner before we could go trick or treating some more. So we did just that, Jeff came home, and we headed over to Don and Cindy's house to meet Scott and Kellie and kids to go trick or treating with them. Luckily it was a pretty nice night out. A little bit chilly, but Deacon was okay with a sweater under his costume and Bentley put a coat under her costume and said she was hot! Leo stayed in his stroller with Grandma by the fire their neighbor always has. It turned out to be a great night! Deacon was absolutely hilarious this year! His excitement was contagious as he ran from house to house screaming "nandy!!", shouting "trick or treat!" and remembering to say thank you most the time after examining which candy he got. He also loved all the Halloween decorations, but was very concerned when he thought there was an actual person stuck under a garage door. He desperately tried to pull this "person's" legs out from under the door as I tried so hard to tell him it's not real, just a decoration. He couldn't quite wrap his mind around that. Bentley ran right alongside Emri with their matching costumes and had an absolute blast! We did lots of houses and once the kids' bags were super full we headed back to Don and Cindy's to dump and sort. I grabbed a hot chocolate from the neighbors and went inside until we were all tired and ready to go home. The kids ate a fair bit of candy and then we did our daddy and mommy tax and took half of it. Deacon decided to be a very nice boy and kept giving his candy to everyone that would take it. So honestly, the amount left wasn't too overwhelming and they ate most of it in the next few days. What a fun fun Halloween this year!!
