Sometimes life throws things at you unexpectedly. On Wednesday I was looking forward to a relaxing trip with just my husband to Las Vegas. We had planned this a few months ago and were so excited to get a little break from the kids and hang out together as a couple. I had been feeling pretty tired that week so I thought I was in definite need of a break! Turns out there was another reason why I was probably feeling tired.
On Wednesday I woke up with bad stomach pain. At first I thought it was just a stomach ache and it would go away, but the pain didn't stop for a second and only got worse. I took a bath hoping that would help but when it made it worse, I decided to go into the clinic. I made an appointment at the clinic in Chaparral and drove myself over there. It wasn't that far and I was feeling good enough to drive. My mom was already over at my house so she watched the kids when I left. When I got into the room with the doctor I suddenly felt so light-headed, nauseated, and had to lay down. The pain in my stomach hadn't lessened at all and I think I was starting to go into a bit of shock. The doctor thought it could be early signs of Appendicitis but wasn't sure. He told me to go to Urgent Care to get blood work done to find out. He also said I couldn't drive so Jeff left work and picked me up. I got in really quickly and they took blood and a urine test, gave me something for nausea and an IV, and eventually gave me some morphine finally! It didn't take all the pain away but it definitely made it so much more manageable. The doctor was a little surprised I had been referred from a doctor, and seemed to think I just had a virus at first. They were a little shocked when my blood work came back with super high white cell counts. It's a good indicator that I needed my Appendix out, along with my pain becoming more right-sided, but they had to send me to the hospital to get an ultrasound to be sure. So, I took an ambulance ride to the hospital. Crazy, right?! (Don't worry, it was on them!). I felt so weird and couldn't believe what was happening but all I knew was that I wanted the pain gone, and they continued to give me more morphine until I didn't feel the pain at all anymore. It was wonderful. Well, I got in to the ultrasound surprisingly fast and they found my appendix really swollen so now they knew I needed surgery. There were 2 others before me, apparently, that needed the same surgery, so it was a bit of a waiting game after that. Not too long, though! They called me in earlier than planned and I got the surgery done at 9pm that night. They put me under, so all I remember is them putting the mask on me and administering the anesthetic, and then waking up in the recovery room with such a dry throat! Apparently they put tubes down my throat to keep me asleep, so that must be why. I woke up around 11:30 and was surprised it was that late. Anyways, the surgery was successful! There are 3 incisions in my stomach, but they didn't have to do any extra. Two of them will be hidden pretty well and one scar will show a lot I'm sure, but it's not too big.
Well, recovery is not too bad pain wise, but it is so hard to not lift my kids or be able to help them like I normally do. They say I will be back to normal in 6 weeks, but that is a long time! So right now I've had help with the kids from our parents, and I'm trying to find help for next week as well. I'm not really sure what one does in this situation? How can I do my job of being a mom? I am restricted to lifting no more than 10 lbs, so I can't. Jeff's considering hiring someone to help, but I think that's a little weird! Anyways, I'm taking it day by day.
We cancelled our trip to Vegas, and ended up getting our money back for $200. Not terrible. But, I'm really bummed we didn't get to go!! I was so excited the day before, I was getting butterflies! Anyway, I'm super thankful for all the help I had and all the little blessings along the way. Everything went really smoothly so I can't forget about that!
